The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein
“Once there was
a tree…and she loved a little boy.”
The Giving Tree is a
bittersweet tale of giving everything for those you love. I get choked up every
time I read it, kind of in the same way as I
Love You Forever by Robert Munsch. I included this story because Shel
Silverstein is a great writer and you should definitely get your younger
students to read him! But also, The
Giving Tree reminds us of the sometimes thankless task it is to be a
teacher. You will give your everything to your students and they might not
recognize or appreciate it. They may even resent the assignments you create
because they don’t see the deeper purpose behind it. Or at least…they don’t see
it yet.
This artefact
reminds us that as teachers we will give a lot, maybe even everything, and it
will be hard. But hopefully it will be worth it.
